What does cell division do?
Allows organisms to heal and repair damaged parts. Also allows organisms to grow and reproduce.(single-celled organisms)
What type of cells do not undergo mitosis?
Sperm cells and Egg cells
What is a chromosme made of?
Protein and DNA
In humans, how many chromosomes should be in each of the diploid cells after mitosis.
46
In mitosis, the cells that are created are what to each other.
They are identical to each other
What would happen if cells were in mitosis more than they are in interphase?
Cells would reproduce too fast. Which can cause cancer.
It can also cause mistakes in DNA
What happens in Prophase?
DNA condenses into chromosomes and Nuclear membrane starts to break down.
What happens in Metaphase?
Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
(M for Middle)
What happens in Anaphase?
Chromatids are pulled apart by spindle fibers to each side of the cell.
What happens in Telophase?
Chromatids are pulled to the opposite sides of the cell. Nuclear membrane reforms around DNA
What is interphase?
Phase of cell cycle where cell gets a signal to divide. Grows in size and doubles its contents. Copies DNA in a process called replication and prepares for division.
What is Cytokinesis?
Final stage of cell cycle. Division of cytoplasm and distribution of organelles into each daughter cell. In plant cells: Cell wall cannot pinch in, forms cell plate. In animal cells: Cell membrane pinches in to divide.
How does the number of cells increase with each new division?
Increases by doubling
In the interphase, where is the DNA located in the cell?
In the nucles
What is the cell cycle?
Regular sequence of events that allows for cell division to form two identical daughter cells.
