Makes ATP
Mitochondria
Osmosis is:
the diffusion of water.
Where does the word cell come from?
The rooms monks lived in.
Describe 2 safety procedures for microscopes.
Carry with 2 hands, don't put it on the edge of the table.
What is an autotroph?
Something that makes its own food.
Makes sugars by absorbing light energy.
Chloroplast
This type of transport requires the use of energy
Active transport
Simple cells that do not contain many organelles. Including things like bacteria.
Prokaryotes.
A microscope has an eyepiece with a magnification of 15X and is on an objective that has a magnification of 20X. What is the total magnification?
300X
What type of cells are found in a plant?
You loose 500 points if you said plant cells. Eukaryotic cells.
2 questions: Contains DNA?
site of protein synthesis?
Nucleus
Ribosome
Water moves across a semi-permeable membrane. Describe the direction the water moves in terms of concentrations.
High to low concentration.
List 3 differences between plant and animal cells.
Chloroplast and cell wall in plant cells. Rigid structure vs not rigid.
Describe how to make a wet-mount slide of a piece of onion.
Put onion on slide with a drop of water, add cover slip.
Around how much energy is lost as you move from one trophic level to the next?
90%
2 parts: This is a rigid structure surrounding cells.
This helps sort and ship things in a cell.
Cell wall
Golgi
Describe how a white blood cell defeats an invading bacteria.
Endocytosis, WBC eats the bacteria.
This is the general category of more complex cells that contain many organelles.
Eukaryotes
What is a phospholipid and why do we care?
Lipid that makes up cell membranes.
Describe primary succession.
Starts with rock or with an ecosystem that was completely destroyed from a major disturbance.
Draw an animal cell. Include at least 5 labeled structures.

A potato is placed in a solution. All the potato cells shrivel up. What could the solution be and how do you know?
Water is diffusing out of the potato cells which is why they are shrinking. We know that there must be a high concentration of solute in the solution outside the cells so the solution might be a salt-water solution.
List the 3 parts of the cell theory.
Cells are the basic unit of life.
Everything alive is made of cells.
Cells come from other cells.
Draw a model of a cell membrane and explain how it works.
-
Explain the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem stability.
Increased biodiversity makes ecosystems more stable.
