Cell Discovery
(PS) Is normally concentrated in the cytosolic leaflet of the plasma membrane. During apoptosis, membrane asymmetry is disrupted and (PS) becomes exposed on the extracellular surface. This acts as signal allowing phagocytic cells to recognize and remove apoptotic cells efficiently without triggering the same inflammatory response associated with many forms of necrotic cell death.
Phosphatidylserine
Large molecules that cannot pass through the phospholipid bilayer must pass through these.
