What is Pinch Pot?
Super wet watery clay, can be used as 'glue'.
What is Slip?
The process used to attach one piece of clay to another; Scratching up the surface of clay, clay “glue”, pressing/joining/smoothing pieces together.
What is Joining/Welding; Score - slip - weld?
A coating that fires at a lower temperature; Cone 05-06. “O is Low”. Can only be applied to bisqueware. Blick and Jungle Gems.
What is Low Fire Glaze?
A flat piece of clay.
What is Slab?
Wet clay we use to contsruct and model.
What is Wet/Plastic?
Preparing clay before use, to mix clay and expel air; get rid of air pockets.
What is Wedging?
This tool is used to slice big pieces of clay off from a larger chunk.
What is a wire tool or cutting wire?
A coating that fires at a higher temperature; Cone 5-6. Color guides should be used when layering glazes. Can only be applied to bisqueware. Amaco and Mayco.
What is High Fire Glaze?
A long, round, snakelike piece of clay.
What is Coil?
Fired in the kiln once, white and 'rock hard'.
What is Bisque?
This tool is used to make a piece of clay flat.
What are a rolling pin and guide sticks or Slab Roller?
To properly lock in moisture and prevent fast drying, hand-built projects on a ware board should be covered using this number of plastic bags.
What is Two?
A method of forming clay using a machine. As clay twists and turns on the wheel an artist uses their hands to manipulate the clay into a desired form/shape.
What is Throwing?
Halfway dry and good for carving.
What is Leather Hard?
If you want to create a solid-looking shape (hollow inside), you need to make sure to have this to let air escape.
What is a vent/hole?
This tool is used to mass-produce uniform coils.
What is an Extruder?
When turning in finished pieces for firing, unfired greenware must be placed on the [Color 1] cart, while glazed pieces belong on the [Color 2] cart.
What is Green and Blue?
Gently manipulating clay into a desired form. Must be cut in half, hollowed out, and “stitched” back together.
What is Modeling?
Air dry and ready for the kiln - takes 1 to 2 weeks - most fragile stage.
What is Bone Dry?
Derived from the Italian word meaning "to scratch," this decorative technique involves applying colored slip over clay and carving through it to reveal the contrasting clay beneath.
What is Sgraffito?
You use this to smooth your projects. It is made of sheep or lamb skin.
What is a Chamois?
A coating that can be applied on greenware or bisqueware. This coating has a matte finish.
