Building Techniques I
A hand building technique in which a ball of clay is pinched from the center out with the thumbs to create a bowl shape.
What is pinch technique?
A large oven that ceramics are baked in.
What is a kiln?
This term refers to the workability of clay when the tiny soil particles are wet and stick together so that the clay can be molded.
What is plasticity?
Pointed tool for cutting thin slabs of clay and scoring clay to join two pieces of clay together.
What is a needle tool?
Handbuilding technique in which the object is built up with rope like pieces of clay, one on top of another.
What is coil technique?
This is a general term for clay objects that have been fired to change it to a permanent hardened state.
What is ceramics?
A thin coating of special glass, used as a decoration and to seal clay surfaces.
What is Glaze?
Clay that has been fired two times and has been painted with a substance to form a glass coating on the surface.
What is glazeware?
A plastic or metal tool used for smoothing clay
What is a rib tool?
Handbuilding technique in which flat pieces of clay are joined together.
What is the slab technique?
Scratching lines in the surface of the clay for joining pieces.
What is scoring?
What stage of dryness must clay be in for the first fire?
What is Bone Dry?
Clay that has not been fired.
What is greenware?
Tool has looped metal wire ends for hollowing and sculpting soft clay
What is a wire loop tool?
A liquid form of clay used as a glue to join pieces. Can also be used for decoration.
What is slip?
This term refers to a functional ceramic object shaped from moist clay and fired.
What is pottery?
This term refers to a ceramic ware that has been fired once without glaze.
What is bisqueware?
During this stage of clay, the clay is stiff and will hold it's shape, it's good for carving.
What is leatherhard?
This tool is used for cutting large lumps of clay.
What is a wire cutter?

What is wheel throwing?
Creating a form utilizing flat pieces of clay

During this stage of clay you cannot add any more wet clay.
