What is the flaps up Vref speed?

83 KIAS

100

What is required to fly through an AIDZ?

Be on a flight plan and have it open/active

100

What are the scuba diving requirements regarding aviation? Is it regulatory?

If going below 8,000' wait 12 hours if there was no controlled ascent, 24 hours if there was a controlled ascent

24 hours no matter what if above 8,000'

200

What are the responsibilities for all aviation instructors?

Helping students learn

Emphasize the positive

Minimize student frustrations

Provide adequate instruction

Standards ensured

Safety ensured

200

How do you minimize student frustrations?

Motivate the student

Approach student as an individual

Constructive criticism

Keep them informed

Be consistent

Admit errors

Give credit when credit due

200

Why does maneuvering speed increase with weight?

The higher weight requires more lift to continue straight and level, thus requiring a higher angle of attack. With the higher AoA, you are already closer to the critical AoA.

200

What is an STC and what is the purpose?

Supplemental type certificate, keeping the aircraft legal when making significant changes?

200

Describe KIAS, KTAS, and KCAS

True: airspeed through a body of air

Indicated: airspeed the aircraft is performing at

Calibrated: KIAS corrected for error

300

What are some barriers of effective communication?

Confusion of symbol/object

Overuse of abstractions

Interference

Lack of common experience

300
What is the minimum number of endorsements required for a private pilot to go from 0 time to take the practical test?

10

300

What is the stall speed of the DA40-NG at a 45 degree bank with flaps LDG and UP?

LDG: 69 KIAS

UP: 74 KIAS

300

What are specific examples of anti-ice/de-ice? Pros and cons? What do we have?

Boots

Bleed air

Weeping wings

Electrical

300

What are the standards for slow flight for a commercial and private pilot?

Private: Altitude +/- 100', speed +10/-0 knots, heading +/-10 degrees

Commercial:  Altitude +/- 50', speed +5/-0 knots, heading +/-10 degrees

400

What are some characteristics of effective assessment?

Flexible

Acceptable

Specific

Thoughtful

Comprehensive

Objective

Constructive

Organized

400

A helicopter pilot walks into the FBO and wants to get his private pilot fixed wing. What endorsements will he need?

A.1

A.72

A.74

400

Describe why an aircraft with an aft CG is more maneuverable?

Less control inputs are required to make a movement because the arm between CG and rudder/elevator are shorter

400

What is a national security area and what does that mean for pilots? What does it look like on a sectional?

Area that the federal government determines is sensitive and may cause a danger. Pilots are requested to stay out, magenta dashed line on a sectional.

400

What are the hazardous attitudes?

Macho

Ant-authority

Invulnerability

Impulsivity

Resignation

500

A student pilot is flying with you, and is struggling with stalls. They are afraid of stalls, but don't know why and can't articulate it. What might be occurring here?

Repression -- subconscious hiding away of fears/emotions without knowing it is happening

500
What is required to issue an A.14 to a student that is not a citizen of the United States.

See 14 CFR 1552, FTSP background check

500

Describe aspect ratio and how if effects an airfoil.

Ratio of a wing's span to a wing's chord

High aspect ratio, long and thin, produces less induced drag and therefore better glide ratios

Low aspect, short and stubby, produces more induced drag

500
How does a carbonated engine work? What are some of the downsides?

A carburetor works by using the venturi effect to draw fuel into the chamber, mix it with air, and create a combustible mixture for the engine. Carburetor ice can occur at temperatures up to 70 degrees F.

500

In reference to the NATS what does SLOP mean and what is the standard offset for those on the tracks?

-Josh

SLOP or strategic lateral offset program is designed to offset aircraft tracking similar courses across the North Atlantic Track System. The maximum offset will be between 1-2NM offset from course centerline.
