this is when Bilbo meets Gollum and they give each other riddles. If Bilbo wins, then Gollum must show him the way out, if Gollum wins then he gets to eat Bilbo

Biblo has just killed the giant spider and looks at his powerful sword that he used in the attack as he says this.

"Quicker, Quicker!" said the voice. "The torches will soon be relit."
Gandalf magically extinguished the goblin's torches so the dwarves (and Bilbo) could flee

Gandalf is telling the dwarves that he chose Bilbo for the job of helping them reclaim the dwarves' treasures and he stands by his choice.
