Postwar adjustments in American society produced tensions and conflict in the workplace and racial tensions. Unions lost many members and support. Strikes for better working conditions and pay was blamed on Communists. Integration and African American migration to the north caused racial tensions and violence. White people did not want the competition of African Americans in factory jobs.

America’s searching for a return to “normal” resulted in remembering the good times before the war. Americans wanted to return to an isolationist view, limiting our involvement with other countries. Government views on business also returned to pre war views, limiting government involvement and allowing businesses to have less restrictions. This was generally not good for workers.

New ways of making products with electricity and the assembly line reduced the cost of many goods. Some factory workers earned more pay, and many people spent that money on a car and electric appliances. Some business suffered, less demand for railroads with all the cars, and farmers and textile factories struggled. Many new jobs were created around the automobile industry.

The 1920’s was a period of many social and cultural changes due to changes in technology, the role of women, and mass media. The conflict between traditional and modern values could be seen in the growth of the KKK, and legal battles over topics taught at school. Immigrants were a target of blame and anger in the U.S. resulting in immigration quotas.
