Lesson 1: Spanish Colonies in the Americas
A system in which Natives were supposed to be treated better in the new Spanish colonies. Spaniards could still make Natives work for them. In return, they had to protect their workers and teach them about Christianity.
What is the encomienda system?

This is the group of religious people who split from the Church of England because of their beliefs. They moved so they could worship freely.
Who were the Separatists?
This was the name of the route explorers were trying to find which would cut directly through North America.
What was the Northwest Passage?
This person was one of Jamestown Colony's leaders who brought them through hard times. He was a captain who helped guide the colonists.
Who was John Smith?
A person who rules a country or territory as a representative of the king or queen.
What is a viceroy?
People who followed the Church of England, which was a protestant religion.
Who are the Anglicans?
The term for someone who goes on a long journey, usually for religious reasons.
What is a pilgrim?
This was the colony founded by Peter Stuyvesant which allowed people of many nationalities (Dutch, German, Swedish, etc.) to settle. They collaborated well with the Natives.
What was the New Sweden colony?
He was a British explorer who claimed the Hudson River Valley for the Netherlands.
Who was Henry Hudson?
A person who is sent to another country to convince others to believe in a particular religion.
What is a missionary?
The term for someone who agrees to work without pay for someone else for a set period of time.
What is an indentured servant?
The document which explained how the pilgrims would govern themselves. It was signed by all onboard the Mayflower, before they went onto the land for the first time.
What is the Mayflower Compact?
This was the trading company who built a trading post at the south end of what is now Manhattan, New York.
What was the Dutch West India Company?
He was a Spaniard who established St. Augustine, located in present-day Florida.
Who was Pedro Melendez de Aviles?
This is the fort which was built by the Spanish in Florida.
What is the fort at St. Augustine?
This is the Native tribe who had a difficult relationship with the English colonists at Jamestown.
Who were the Powhatans?
This was the Native group who the pilgrims who settled Plymouth worked with to grow food.
Who are the Wampanoag people?
This explorer explored for the French king, established a colony which failed, and returned to France with worthless rocks.
Who was Jacques Cartier?
This was a French explorer who founded Quebec in New France.
Who was Samuel de Champlain?
This was the font which was built along the Florida coast by France, prior to the Spanish settling.
What is Fort Caroline?
This government organization was made up of a governor and 22 representatives. Each town elected two representatives who went to assemble and represent their towns.
