What is Alveoli
Resembling a bunch of grapes, with approximately 500 million alveoli in an adult’s lung. Direct space for gas exchange.
What is Bronchi
Trachea divides into two of these near the center of the chest.
What is Bronchioles
Bronchi divides into smaller branches of such.
What is Cellular respiration
Process of the cell using oxygen and nutrients to produce energy, water, and carbon dioxide.
What is Cilia
Tiny, hairlike structures that filter inhaled air to trap dust and other particles.
What is Epiglottis
A special leadlike piece of cartilage that closes the opening into the larynx during swallowing, preventing food and liquids from entering the respiratory tract.
What is Expiration
Exhalation, process of forcing the air out of the lungs and air passages. Diaphragm relaxes.
What is External respiration
Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and the bloodstream.
What is Inspiration
Inhalation, process of breathing in air. Diaphragm contracts and enlarges the thoracic cavity to create a vacuum.
What is Internal respiration
Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the tissue cells and the bloodstream.
What is Larynx
Voice box, lies between the pharynx and trachea, with nine layers of cartilage.
What is Lungs
Organ, containing the divisions of the bronchi and the alveoli. Divided into two parts, the left and right lung, with the right having three sections and the left having two, slightly smaller, to make space for the heart.
What is Nasal cavities
Hollow spaces divided by the Nasal septum.
What is Nasal septum
Wall of cartilage that divides the nose into two hollow spaces.
What is Nose
Consists of a bony framework and cartilage with skin covering this framework, and has two openings.
What is Pharynx
Throat, lies directly behind the nasal cavities, responsible for air exchange and food intake.
What is Pleura
Membrane, or sac that encloses the lung.
What is Respiration
Process of inspiration and expiration.
What is Respiratory system
Consists of the lungs and air passages, responsible for air exchanges.
What is Sinuses
Cavities in the skull that surround the nasal area.
What is Trachea
Tube extending from the larynx to the center of the chest, carries air between the pharynx and the bronchi.
What is Ventilation
Process of breathing, involving inspiration and expiration.
