What is Bladder
Hollow, muscular sac that lies behind the symphysis pubis and at the midline of the pelvis cavity. It stores urine.
What is Bowman’s capsule
Second part of the nephron, C-shaped structure that surrounds the glomerulus and is the start of the convoluted tubule. It picks up the materials filtered from the blood in the glomerulus and passes them into the tubule.
What is Cortex
The outer section of the kidney.
What is Excretory system
Also known as the urinary system, responsible for removing certain wastes and excess water from the body and for maintaining the body’s acid-base or pH balance.
What is Glomerulus
Cluster of capillaries, first part of the nephron. As blood passes through the glomerulus, water, mineral salts, glucose, metabolic products, and other substances are filtered out of the blood.
What is Hilum
Notched or indented area through which the ureter nerves, blood vessels, and lymph vessels enter and leave the kidney.
What is Homeostasis
State of equilibrium or constant state of natural balance in the internal environment of the body.
What is Kidneys
Two bean-shaped organs located on either side of the vertebral column, behind the upper part of the abdominal cavity, and separated from this cavity by the peritoneum.
What is Medulla
The inner section of the kidney.
What is Nephrons
Microscopic filtering units located in the kidneys. More than one million nephrons per kidney.
What is Renal pelvis
Funnel-shaped structure that is the first section of the ureter, the part where urine drains in.
What is Ureters
Two muscular tubes approximately 10-12 inches in length. One extends from the renal pelvis of each kidney to the bladder.Peristalsis (wavelike motion of muscle) moves urine from kidney to bladder.
What is Urethra
The tube that carries the urine from the bladder to the outside.
What is Urinary meatus
External opening of the urethra.
What is Urinary system
Also known as the excretory system, responsible for removing certain wastes and excess water from the body and for maintaining the body’s acid-base or pH balance.
What is Urine
Concentrated waste liquid that contains excess glucose and mineral salts, some water, and wastes including urea, uric acid, and creatinine.
What is Void
Urinate or micturate.
