Abdominal cavity
Contains stomach, small intestine, most of the large intestine, appendix, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen
Abdominal regions
Abdominal cavity split into 9 different regions
Anterior
Body parts in front of the plane
Bilateral
Both sides of the body is affected by a pathologic condition
Body Cavities
Spaces within the body that contain vital organs
Body Planes
Imaginary lines drawn through the body at various parts to separate the body into sections
Buccal Cavity
Cavity containing the teeth and tongue (mouth)
Caudal
Body parts located near the sacral region of the spinal column (tail)
Cranial
Body parts located near the head
Cranial Cavity
Half of the dorsal cavity containing the brain
Deep
Indicate structures located away from the body surface
Distal
Body parts far from the point of reference
Dorsal
One long, continuous cavity located on the back of the body
Frontal (Coronal) Plane
Body plane that divides the body into a front and back section
Inferior
Body parts below other body parts
Lateral
Body parts away from the midline
Medial
Body parts close to the midline or plane
Midsagittal Plane
Sagittal plane that runs down the midline of the body and divides it into two equal halves
Nasal Cavity
Cavity containing nose structures
Orbital Cavity
Cavity containing the eyes
Pelvic Cavity
Contains the urinary bladder, reproductive organs, last part of large intestine
Posterior
Body parts on the back of the body
Proximal
Body parts close to the point of reference
Sagittal Plane
Body plane dividing the body into left and right sections
Spinal Cavity
Half of the dorsal cavity containing the spine
