Ch. 7.2 Body Planes, Directions, and Cavities Terms
The superior part of the abdominopelvic cavity containing the stomach, small intestine, most of the large intestine, appendix, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen.
Abdominal cavity
Imaginary lines drawn through the body at various parts to separate the body into sections.
body planes
Deep
Internal to indicate the structures are located away from the body surface.
Lateral
Body parts away from the midline or plane.
The inferior part of the abdominopelvic cavity which contains the urinary bladder, the reproductive organs, and the last part of the large intestine.
A precise method of division of the abdomen into nine regions.
Abdominal regions
One of the three small body cavities, or cavity for the mouth, or teeth and tongue.
distal
Body parts distant from the point of reference (used to describe the location of the extremities).
Medial
Body parts close to the midline or plane.
Body parts on the back of the body (also called dorsal).
Posterior
Another term for ventral (body parts in front of the plane, or on the front of the body).
Anterior
Means body parts located near the sacral region of the spinal column (also known as the "tail").
Caudal
Dorsal
Another term for posterior (body parts on the back of the body).
Midsagittal plane
A sagittal plane that runs down the midline of the body and divides the body into equal halves.
Proximal
Body parts close to the point of reference (used to describe the location of the extremities).
Used to refer to which sides of the body are affected by certain pathologic conditions (affect both sides of the body).
Bilateral
Means body parts located near the head.
Cranial
Frontal Plane
Divides the body into a front section and a back section.
Nasal Cavity
One of the three small body cavities, or cavity for the nose structures.
Divides the body into left and right sections.
Sagittal Plane
Spaces within the body that contain vital organs.
Body cavities
The section of the dorsal cavity which contains the brain.
Cranial Cavity
Inferior
Divides the body into a front section and a back section.
Orbital cavity
One of the three small body cavities, or cavity for the eyes.
Spinal Cavity
The section of the dorsal cavity which contains the spinal cord.
