Ch. 7.2 Body Planes, Directions, and Cavities
What is the abdominal cavity?
The abdominal cavity contains the stomach, small intestine, most of the large intestine, appendix, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen, and is part of the ventral cavities.
What are body planes?
Body planes are imaginary lines drawn through the body at various parts to separate the body into sections.
What does deep mean?
Deep, or internal, to indicate the structures are located away from the body surface.
What is lateral?
Lateral are body parts away from the sagittal midline.
What is the pelvic cavity?
The pelvic cavity contains the urinary bladder, reproductive organs, and the last part of the large intestine, and is part of the ventral cavity.
What are the abdominal regions?
The abdominal regions are the abdominal cavity divided into sections, 4 or 9. (ex. RUQ, LUQ, RLQ, LLQ)
What is the buccal cavity?
The buccal cavity contains the mouth (teeth and tongue).
What is distal?
Distal is distant from the point of reference.
What is medial?
Medial is body parts close to the sagittal midline.
What is posterior?
Posterior are body parts on the beck or behind the coronal plane.
What is anterior?
Anterior are body parts in front of the coronal plane.
What is caudal?
Caudal are body parts located near the sacral region of the spinal column.
What is dorsal?
The dorsal cavity is one long, continuous cavity located on the back of the body.
What is the midsagittal plane?
When the sagittal plane runs down the midline of the body and divides the body into equal halves.
What is proximal?
Proximal is close to the point of reference.
What is bilateral?
Bilateral is affecting both sides of the body.

What is the frontal (coronal) plane?
The coronal plane divides the body into a front section and a back section.
What is the nasal cavity?
The nasal cavity contains the nose structures.
What is the sagittal plane?
The sagittal plane divides the body into left and right sections.
What are body cavities?
Body cavities are spaces within the body that contain vital organs.
What is the cranial cavity?
The cranial cavity contains the brain, and is part of the dorsal cavity.

The orbital cavity contains the eyes.
What is the spinal cavity?
The spinal cavity contains the spinal cord, and is part of the dorsal cavity.
