What are abdominal regions?
A method of dividing the abdominal cavity into nine specific areas.
What is anterior?
A directional term for body parts on the front of the body; also known as ventral
What is bilateral?
Affecting both sides of the body.
What are body cavities?
Spaces within the body that contain vital organs.
What are body planes?
Imaginary lines drawn through the body at various levels to separate the body into sections.
What is caudal?
A directional term meaning toward the feet or "tail" (sacral region)
What is cranial?
A directional term meaning toward the head; pertaining to the skull.
What is deep?
Refers to structures located away from the body surface.
What is distal?
Refers to body parts located distant (farther away) from the point of reference, which is usually the point of attachment to the trunk
What is dorsal?
A directional term for body parts on the back of the body; also known as posterior.
What is the frontal (coronal) plane?
An imaginary plane that divides the body into a front section (anterior) and a back section (posterior)
What is inferior?
A directional term for body parts located below other parts (toward the feet).
What is lateral?
A directional term for body parts located away from the midline.
What is medial?
A directional term for body parts located close to the midline.
What is the midsagittal plane?
A specific sagittal plane that runs down the midline and divides the body into equal right and left halves.
What is posterior?
A directional term for body parts on the back of the body; also known as dorsal.
What is proximal?
Refers to body parts located close to the point of reference, which is usually the point of attachment to the trunk.
What is the sagittal plane?
An imaginary plane that divides the body into left and right sections
What is superficial?
Refers to structures located near the body surface; also known as external
What is superior?
A directional term for body parts located above other parts (toward the head)
What is the transverse plane?
A horizontal plane that divides the body into a top half (superior) and a bottom half (inferior).
What is unilateral?
Affecting one side of the body.
What is ventral?
A directional term for body parts on the front of the body; also known as anterior.
What is the buccal cavity?
The mouth, containing the teeth and tongue.
What is the cranial cavity?
A part of the dorsal cavity that contains the brain.
