What does the abdominal cavity contain?
contains the stomach, small intestine, most of the large intestine, appendix, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen
What are body planes?
imaginary lines drawn through the body at various parts to separate the body into sections
What does deep mean?
internal to indicate the structures are located away from the body surface
What does lateral mean?
body parts away from the midline
What does the pelvic cavity contain?
contains the urinary bladder, the reproductive organs, and the last part of the large intestine
What are abdominal regions?
sections or regions of the abdominal cavity
What does the buccal cavity contain?
mouth, for the teeth and tongue
What does distal mean?
body parts distant from the point of reference
What does medial mean?
body parts close to the midline, or plane
What does posterior mean?
body parts on the back of the body
body parts in the front of the body
body parts located near the sacral region of the spinal column
What does dorsal mean?
body parts on the back of the body
What is a midsaggital plane?
plane created when a sagittal plane runs down the midline of the body and divides the body into equal halves
What does proximal mean?
body parts close to the point of reference
What does bilateral mean?
used to refer to both sides of the body
What does cranial mean?
body parts located near the head
What is a frontal (coronal) plane?
plane that divides the body into a front section and a back section
What does the nasal cavity contain?
nose structures
What is a sagittal plane?
plane that divides the body into left and right sections
What are body cavities?
spaces within the body that contain vital organs
What does the cranial cavity contain?
contains the brain
What does inferior mean?
body parts below other parts
What does the orbital cavity contain?
the eyes
What does the spinal cavity contain?
contains the spinal cord
