What is the appendicular skeleton?
The appendicular skeleton form the extremities.
What is the diaphysis?
The diaphysis is the long shaft of the bone.
What are fontanels?
Fontanels are soft spots that allow for enlargement of the skull and brain growth occurs.
What is the medullary canal?
The medullary canal is a cavity in the diaphysis, filled with yellow marrow.
What is pereosteum?
Pereosteum is the tough membrane on the outer bone that contains blood vessels, lymph vessels, and osteoblasts.
What is the axial skeleton?
The axial skeleton forms the main trunk of the body. (skull, spinal column, ribs, breastbone)
What is the endosteum?
The endosteum is the membrane that lines the medullary canal and keeps yellow marrow intact.
What is foramina?
Foramina is the mucous membrane that lines the sinuses, opening in bones that allow nerves and blood vessels to enter or leave the bone.
What are metacarpals?
Metacarpals are palm bones, connect the wrist to fingers.
What are phalanges?
Phalanges are the bones that make up fingers and toes.
What are carpals?
Carpals are the wrist bones.
What is the epiphysis?
What epiphysis are the two extremities, ends, of the bone.
What is the humerus?
The humerus is the upper arm.
What are metatarsals?
Metatarsals are the instep of foot, connect heel to toes.
What is the radius?
The radius is the lower arm on the thumb side that rotates around the ulna to allow the hand to turn freely.
What are clavicles?
Clavicles are collarbones.
What is the femur?
Femurs are the thigh bones.
What are joints?
Joints are where two or more bones join together.
What is os coxae?
Os coxae are hip bones.
What is red marrow?
Red marrow houses hematopoiesis, the way all blood cells are formed.
What is the cranium?
The cranium surrounds and protects the brain.
What are fibulas?
Fibulas are the slender, smaller bone of the lower leg that attaches to the proximal end of the tibia.
What are ligaments?
Ligaments are connective tissues that help hold bones together at joints.
What are patellas?
Patellas are kneecaps.
What are ribs?
Ribs attach to the thoracic vertebrae on the dorsal surface of the body.
