When a student isn't following classroom rules or meeting behavioral expectations. It serves as a consequence that encourages them to improve their behavior, especially if the privilege is something they value. This would be most likely effective when teaching middle schoolers and high schoolers.
Santiago avoids things constantly. He isn’t disruptive, but he also doesn’t seem to be engaged. He doesn’t refuse to get to work, but also doesn’t get started. Santiago doesn’t argue with you when you ask them to open his book, but he also doesn’t manage to do so by the time you walk by his desk again.

Apply it to all students equally to ensure fairness. Make sure the extra work is relevant to the subject and that the extra work is an opportunity to improve understanding or catch up on missed learning, rather than purely as a punishment
