Alveoli
What is air sacs at the base of the lungs where O2 and CO2 exchange takes place
100
function of the respiratory system
What is transport oxygen from atmosphere to the body where it is utilized by cells, tissues, and organs. Also removes CO2 as a waste product so it doesn't build up to toxic levels in the body
100
Alveoli
What is air sacs at the bases of the lungs where O2 and CO2 gas exchange takes place. The collapse of alveoli is known as atelectasis.
100
Ventilation
What is the movement of air in and out of the lungs
100
Respiration
What is O2 & CO2 gas exchange
200
Vestibular Region
What is part of the entrance of the nasal cavity that houses the hairs
200
Olfactory Region
What is the part that sits on the roof of the nasal cavity. It holds air so it can be smelled.
200
The region of the brain that controls breathing
What is cerebrum
200
Epiglottis
What is Fibrocartilage that closes over the opening to larynx when you swallow and opens up when you breathe. “Seals” so food does not enter lungs.
200
Medical term for the Voice Box
What is Larynx
300
Medical term for the Throat
What is Pharynx
300
Sleep Apnea
What is breathing stops during sleep
300
Pneumothorax
What is extra air that surrounds the lungs
300
PFT
What is pulmonary function test. Measures lung function in terms of volumes and flows. Lungs ability to take in and release air.
300
Asthma
What is chronic inflammatory condition of the airways
400
Surfactant function
What is decreases surface tension preventing alveoli from collapsing upon expiration; also increases surface tension by thinning out during inhalation to prevent overexpansion
400
Antitussive
What is suppresses cough
400
Lung infection in which an excessive amount of fluid builds up in the lungs
What is Pneumonia
400
Abnormal respiratory condition in which the alveolar walls are damaged and destroyed
What is Emphysema
400
Cystic Fibrosis
What is hereditary disease causing excessive mucus buildup, difficulty digestion, and repeated infections
500
Hemoptysis
What is spitting up blood. Hem/o = blood; -ptysis = spitting
500
Lobectomy
What is surgical removal of the lobe. Lob/o = lobe; -ectomy = surgical removal
500
Hypercapnia
What is excessive amount of CO2. Hyper- = excessive; -capnia = CO2
500
Diaphragmatosis
What is abnormal condition of the diaphragm. Diaphragmat/o = diaphragm; -osis = abnormal condition
500
The path for respiration. Start with the nares and end with the alveoli
What is O2 enters nares, into nasal cavity, down the pharynx and trachea, then branches into 2 bronchi, the bronchi further branch into bronchus tubes, further branching to bronchioles, ending with the alveoli. Capillaries sit upon the alveoli and O2 and CO2 gas exchange takes place. CO2 is then breathed out as a waste product.
