100
The smallest unit of an element that still has the properties of that element.
What is an atom?
100
Name 2 characteristics of matter?
What is matter takes up space and has mass?
100

A physical change.

What is a change in size, shape, or state of matter that does not result in a new substance.

100
What term identifies the change that happens when ice becomes water (solid becoming liquid)?
What is melting?
100
What happens in a chemical change?
A new substance is formed.
200
A group of 2 or more atoms that are joined chemically.
What is a molecule?

True of false - - all matter freezes at 0 degrees celius and boils at 100 degrees celius ?

False - water freezes at 0 degrees celius and boils at 100 degrees celius but different types of matter have different freezing and melting points.

A rock with a mass of 10 kg  is shattered into many pieces.  If all the pieces of the rock are collected and weighed together, how much should they weigh?

A. More than 10 kg because there are now more rocks  B. Less than 10 kg because they are smaller in size now  C. 10 kg because the amount of mass before a change is equal to the amount of mass after a change  D. There is no way to answer this question without more information.

What is C. 10 kg because the amount of mass before a change is equal to the amount of mass after a change

200
What term identifies the change when water becomes water vapor (liquid becoming gas)?
What is boiling or evaporation?
200
A student mixes salt with water to form salt water. Has a chemical reaction taken place? Why or why not?
No, a chemical reaction has not taken place because the water can be evaporated and the salt will be left behind. Salt water is a mixture.
300
A substance made of only one kind of atom.
What is an element?
300

True or false -

In a chemical change, no atoms are created or destroyed, but in a physical changes atoms can be either created or destroyed.

False - in both physical and chemical changes, the amount of matter before the change is equal to the amount of matter after the change.  No atoms are created or destroyed with either a physical change or a chemical change.

300

The atoms in this state of matter of packed very tightly together and vibrate only slightly.

What is a solid?

"Friendship mix" is a combination of goldfish, pretzels and M & Ms. How could you show that this is a physical change and not a chemical change?
Separate the goldfish, pretzels and M & Ms from each other to show that they are still the same substances.
300
What are 2 clues that you can look for that a chemical reaction has taken place?
Color change, bubbles, odor, substance given off (smoke), heat given off
400

Is air matter?  How can you prove your answer?

Yes, air is matter - it is made up of atoms and takes up space.  You can blow up a balloon, put an "empty" cup upside down in water, or inflate a basketball to see that air takes up space.  If you over fill a balloon, it will pop because it cannot hold any more air.

400

The atoms in this state of matter are close together but can move around.  This state of matter takes the shape of the container it is in.

What is liquid?

400

What you would see if you were able to look at a sample of an element (such as oxygen) under a high powered microscope (a microscope that could magnify the tiniest particles of the element).

What are the atoms of the element?

400
Sand is mixed with small pieces of iron. A student uses a magnet to separate the iron from the sand. Has a chemical or a physical change taken place? How do you know?
It is a physical change because the student has just separated the iron from the mixture.
400
Give an example of a chemical change.
Hydrogen reacts with oxygen to form water, baking soda reacts with vinegar to produce gas, bread is baked, an egg is cooked
500

How is mass different than weight?

Mass is the amount of matter in a substance.  It is the same regardless of the effects of gravity.  Weight is a function of gravity and changes depending on gravity's force.

500
Which of these is matter? energy, sunlight, paper, sound
Paper
500

The Law of Conservation of Mass

What is the idea that the amount of matter present before a chemical change is equal to the amount of matter present after a chemical change (matter is not destroyed or created, it is only changed).

500
Provide 2 examples of a physical change of matter.
Changes of state, cutting paper, melting wax, cutting grass, coloring paper,

Benjamin's bike was left outside when it rained.  He noticed that it began to rust after this.  Is rust a chemical or a physical change?  How do you know?

Rust is a chemical change.  It is the result of a reaction between iron, oxygen and water.  The brown, flaky substance that we call rust is a new substance.  Some clues that can help you identify it are - change in color, it looks diffent than the shiny metal it started as, and a new substance is created.
