What is overseas trade, spurred by the crusades, led to the growth of large city states with large towns. Italy was Urban while the rest of Europe was rural. Large cities mean diverse population which creates a breeding ground for new ideas. Wealthy merchant class is created. Scholars returned to the learning of the Greeks and Romans.
