CH 7.2 Body planes, Direction and cavities; key terms
The body cavity that contains the stomach, intestines, liver, spleen, and other organs.
Abdominal cavity
Imaginary lines drawn through the body to separate it into sections.
Body Planes
Away from the surface of the body; internal.
Deep
Body parts located away from the midline.
Lateral
The body cavity containing the bladder, reproductive organs, and part of the intestines.
Pelvic cavity
The nine specific areas of the abdomen used to locate organs or describe pain.
Abdominal regions
The mouth cavity, including the teeth and tongue.
Buccal cavity
Farther away from the point of attachment or trunk of the body.
Distal
Body parts close to the midline.
Medial
Body parts toward the back of the body.
Posterior
Body parts toward the front of the body.
Anterior
Body parts located near the tailbone or lower spine
Caudal
Body parts on the back of the body.
Dorsal
Divides the body into equal right and left halves.
Midsagittal plane
Closer to the point of attachment or trunk of the body.
Proximal
Body parts located on both sides of the body.
Bilateral
Body parts located near the head.
Cranial
Divides the body into front (anterior) and back (posterior) sections.
Frontal plane
The cavity located within the nose.
Nasal cavity
Divides the body into right and left sections (not necessarily equal).
Sagittal plane
Spaces within the body that hold and protect internal organs.
Body cavities
The cavity that contains the brain.
Cranial cavity
Body parts below other parts.
Inferior
The cavities that contain the eyes.
Orbital cavity
The body cavity that contains the spinal cord.
Spinal cavity
