Plain
This area is on the eastern shore of Virginia and includes the Eastern Shore, Dismal Swamp, and Lake Drummond.
Coastal Plain or Tidewater
This state borders Virginia to its south and is often referred to as the "Tar Heel" State.
North Carolina
This is one of the longest rivers in beginning in the Blue Ridge Mountains and flowing into the Chesapeake Bay. The first permanent English colony was founded along this river as well as the capital city of Richmond.

This natural border separates the Coastal Plain from the Piedmont and is where many of the rivers have waterfalls and rough water preventing further travel from early settlers.
Fall Line
This region got its name from the blue appearance and lies in the Appalachian Mountain chain.

This area is one of several penninsulas in Virginia is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Chesapeake Bay on the west. It provided a safe harbor for ships in the Chesapeak Bay due to its location.
Eastern Shore
This Region lies west of the Blue Ridge and east of the Appalachian Plateau.
Valley and Ridge
This state is to the west of Virginia and they share parts of the Appalachian Plateau Region.
