Who discovered the Unit of Force
Newton
What type of force opposes the movement of an object
Friction
What is the Unit of Measure (SI Unit) of Force
N
How do we combine forces that are acting in the same direction?
Add them together
What do we call it when all forces acting on an object equal zero?
NET Force
How is the force that the Earth exerts on a leaf the same as the force that the earth exerts on the moon?
They are both pulling foces
Why does a golf ball stop rolling after being hit down a fairway in a round of golf?
Rolling friction between the ball and the grass
What is the product of an objects mass and its velocity?
Momentum
How does deceleration occur?
It occurs when forces move in oposite directions of travel
What do we call any push or pull that acts on an object?
Force
How fast are you accelerating when you have reached terminal velocity in free fall?
9.8 M/S^2
Friction felt when in Free Fall on Earth
Fluid Friction
What is the Formula for Force
F=ma
The Tendency of an object to stay in one place is called?
Inertia
Which will hit the ground first when dropped from a height of 10m, a marble, a leaf, or a can of soda?
Can of Soda, because it has more than 4x the mass of the marble
What is the REACTION FORCE when someone pushes on the floor
The Floor is pushing on the person
Friction between a parked car tire and the road
Static Friction
What is the Formula for Weight
W= mg
Why aren’t we pulled toward each other if all objects that have mass experience a gravitational pull?
our masses are too small to really be felt
What does the word conservation mean when discussing physics?
the value is constant and doesn’t change
State Newtons Thee Laws
1. An object in motion will stay in motion and an object at reast will stay at rest every object will stay at rest unless action on by an external force.
2. F = ma, or net force is equal to mass times acceleration. A larger net force acting on an object causes a larger acceleration, and objects with larger mass require more force to accelerate.
3.For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Friction Between an ice cube and the countertop
sliding friction
What is the acceleration due to gravity on Mars if a person on Mars has a weight of 315N and has a mass of 66kg?
4.77m/s^2
Why would it hurt more to get hit by a baseball moving at 15mph than it would to get hit by a ping pong ball moving at the same speed? Explain your reasoning.
Force is eaqul to the mass times acceleration. If both objects are moving with the same accelerative force, then the only variable that would increase the output force would be the mass. The Mass of a baseball is greater than the mass of a ping pong ball.
Why do we slide farther across ice than we would across a carpet?
There is less friction on Ice
