He didn't agree with the Whig on renewing the bank charter. Because this was one of the Whig's main beliefs, members of his cabinet resigned and he was kicked out of the party. The Whig's party was only united in their dislike for the Democratic Party and therefore struggled to agree on many things. This eventually led to the formation of the Republican Party.

The panic led to  a depression, inflation rates rose, and paper banknotes lost their worth. Thousand of business closed, workers lost their jobs, people struggled to pay for food and rent.
