Abraham Lincoln decided to free all of the enslaved African Americans that were in the South. Although, he did not emancipate right away because he did not want to seem desperate when he saw that the North was losing the war; rather, he waited for the right moment to free the slaves.

They took many responsibilities during the war. Many became government workers, salesclerks, teachers, and office workers. Many of them had to suffer through the loss of husbands and kids during the war. Some also managed farms and factories.
