He was a dictator who seized power in the midst of revolution in Mexico. He industrialized the country, but by allowing foreign companies to come in, not by creating companies that benefited the mexican people. He also gave the church immense power and reduced indigenous people to slavery. (This is all why he is later overthrown in the Mexican Revolution by Madero)

This led to a lack of development of industry in the Latin American nations themsevles, and made them basically single exporters of raw goods (basically stuck in a mercantilist system). Their governments were also overthrown at times to advance the economic interests of foreign powers like the United States (Guatemala)

Explain the US intervention in Guatemala in 1954

Guatemala elected Jacobo Arbenz, who wanted to take unused land from the United Fruit Company and make it availabe to Guatemalans. Guatemalans were extremely poor and had no access to land, and the United Fruit Company held 45% of the land in the country (but only used 15% of that land). The UFC enlists help from the CIA and overthrows Arbenz government, installing a brutal dictator, Carlos Castillo Armas
