The collection of values, beliefs, and traditions held by a group of people (perhaps those in a particular region), which can and does change over time
What is culture?
A collection of characteristics that influence a person or family's access to resources (income, occupation, education level)
What is socio-economic status?
The concept that people may hold membership in multiple groups at once, and these overlap to create experiences that are unique from those of each separate identity
What is intersectionality?
The tendency for a person to perform worse on a task because their group is traditionally perceived as having poor ability in it
What is stereotype threat?
The process by which members of one group (e.g. immigrants) adopt some of the values, beliefs, and traditions of another
What is acculturation?
A person's understanding of the differences between people of different genders, as well as the "appropriate behavior" for each
What is a gender schema?
The ability to alternate between languages or dialects across social settings (e.g. at home versus at school)
What is code-switching?
The ability of students to succeed despite disadvantageous circumstances, often through the use of coping strategies
What is resilience?
An awareness of one's personal identity within the context of a diverse group, as well as an appreciation for the differences within it
What is cultural competence?
Behavioral & emotional problems, a history of academic failure, and/or a detached attitude towards their school or education in general
What are common characteristics of at-risk students?
