What is a noun?
A verb that shows that something is being done, a word that shows action
What is an Action verb?
A group of words that expresses a complete thought and contains a subject and predicate
What is a sentence?
a group of words with a subject and a verb
What is a clause?
the object that receives the direct action of the verb
What is the direct object?
a SPECIFIC person, place, thing, or idea
What is a pronoun?
present, present participle, past, past participle
What are the principle parts of verbs?
1- the person or persons speaking 2- the person or persons spoken to 3- the person(s) or things(s) spoken about
What is the subject of a sentence?
a group of words that has neither a subject nor a predicate
What is a phrase?
A word used to join words, phrases, or clauses
What is a conjunction?
words that express an action, state of being or condition
What is a VERB?
two or more verbs that work together as a unit
What is a verb phrase?
tells what the subject is or does or what is done to the subject
What is the predicate of the sentence?
a group of words that does not express a complete thought and missing the subject or the verb
What is a sentence fragment?
A group of words that begins with a preposition, has a object and any modifier of the object
What is a prepositional phrase?
describes nouns and pronouns by limiting (modifying), or making them more specific
What are adjectives?
verbs that do not indicate an obvious action but express a condition or a state of being (to be verbs- am, is, was, were, be, been - as well as sense verbs - look, feel, seem, sound, taste and smell)
What is a linking verb?
the main word or word group that tells whom or what the sentence is about - the core of the subject
What is a simple subject?
expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence. Has both a subject and a verb
What is an independent clause?
tells to whom or for whom the action of the verb is done; example: Jack showed the DOG kindness
What is the indirect object?
connecting word that shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word
What is a preposition?
An action verb that does not have a direct object
What is an intransitive verb?
the main verb in the sentence plus any helping verbs
What is the simple predicate?
A clause in a complex sentence that cannot stand alone as a complete sentence and that
What is a dependent clause?
Phrases that begin with an infinitive. (to + simple form of the verb)
