An area of low rainfall on one side of a mountain?
rain shadow
100
What type of climate are camels adapted to?
dry/desert
100
What is a monsoon?
Wind patterns that bring an increase in precipitation.
100
What type of air mass causes droughts?
continental tropical or warm air mass
200
Define climate.
Long-term weather conditions in a particular location
200
Deforestation causes an increase in what specific harmful gas? What does it do to the temperature of Earth
CO2 (carbon dioxide), increases
200
What do greenhouse gases do?
absorb/ redirect thermal energy They cause the greenhouse effect
200
Describe a tropical climate?
warm year round, lots of precipitation
300
Which area would be warmer a farm or a large city? Why?
a large city, paved roads and buildings absorb thermal energy causing an urban heat island
300
Describe a high altitude climate.
dry, cold
300
How do scientists predict future climate change?
By inputting data into supercomputers, they are able to develop global climate models to predict future climate change
300
What causes Earth's seasons?
Earth's tilt causes the seasons
400
Why do some scientists think global warming is due to natural causes?
Volcanoes and other natural pollution events were happening long before the existence of humans, yet we have evidence of the climate both cooling and warming in predictable patterns.
400
Is Earth in an ice age or interglacial? Explain
Interglacial (between glaciers forming), the most recent ice age ended 10,000 years ago. Glaciers/ poles continue to shrink as temperatures increase.
400
How does burning fossil fuels affect Earth's overall climate?
Burning fossil fuels releases CO2, which is a greenhouse gas. Greenhouse gases help insulate Earth. Added greenhouse gas should mean an increase in temperatures of Earth's climate.
400
What does Earth's tilt have to do with seasons?
The tilt of Earth allows for one hemisphere over the other to be more directly facing the sun. When the N. hemisphere is more directly tilted towards the sun, it will be summer, when the Earth's tilt has the N. hemisphere angle away from the sun, it will be winter.
500
2 examples of how humans have contributed to climate change?
driving cars, burning forests, pollution from factories, etc...
500
What is El Nino?
Atmospheric and ocean cycle that results in weakened trade winds across the Pacific Ocean
500
Would a farmer like or dislike global warming? Why or Why not?
Like- extended growing season would mean more produce and higher profit. Dislike- It may become too warm to grow what the farmer was growing, may have to stop farming and move or grow a different, less profitable crop.
500
What would happen if the Earth wasn't tilted?
No seasons, the equator would be much warmer and the poles would be much colder as they would be more directly and less directly facing the sun, respectively.
