Chapter Questions
100
A weak spot in the crust where molten material (Magma) comes to the surface
What is a volcano
100
The place where the magma collects
What is a magma chamber
100
A tall cone shaped mountain that alternates with lava and ash
What is a composite volcano
100
A broad bowl-shaped valley
What is a basin
100
What three words do scientist use to describe a volcanoes stage of activity?
Active, dormant, and extinct
200
Magma when it reaches the surface
What is lava
200
A volcanoes stage of activity that means it may awaken in the future
What is dormant
200
A large mass of rock that forms when magma cools inside the crust
What is a batholith
200
A activy stage of a volcano that means dead
What is extinct
200
Why do people settle near volcanoes?
Usually it is because of the rich farming soil
300
a molten mixture of rock-forming substances, gases, and water from the mantle
What is magma
300
A fountain of water and steam that shoots from the ground
What is a geyser
300
A huge hole left by the collapse of a volcano
What is a caldera
300
A huge basin in California with the Sierras AND Coast Ranges on either side
What is Central Valley
300
What is the difference between a pipe and a vent?
A pipe is a long tube that connects the magma chamber to the surface and a vent is an opening where molten rock and gas leave through
400
One major volcanic belt that is formed by the many volcanoes that rim the Pacific Ocean
What is the Ring of Fire
400
An explosive eruption that shoots out ashes, cinder, and bombs
What is a pyroclastic flow
400
Magma that forces itself across rock layers hardens to become what?
What is a dike
400
When magma squeezes between horizontal layers of rock
What is sill
400
What are the four major geological feature of California?
Faults,volcanoes,mountain ranges, and basins
500
An area where magma from deep within the mantle melts through the crust above it
What is a hot spot
500
A material found in magma that is made of oxygen and silicon
What is silica
500
This forms when magma hardens in a volcanoes pipe
What is a volcanic neck
500
A wide gently sloping mountain
What is a shield volcano
500
How does a caldera form?
First, the top of a composite volcano explodes and the lava flow partially empties the magma chamber. Then the roof of the magma chamber collapses making a caldera. Last, a cinder cone forms and the caldera partially fills with water
