What is Hickey's argument in his article "The Rise and Fall of Smolensk's Moderate Socialists?"
Smolensk’s moderate socialists presented themselves as both the voice of the democracy and the representatives of the workers- but due to the terrible daily life of the workers it made any party more appealing.
With the lack of workers support, this allowed the Bolsheviks to replace the Moderate Socialist and replace democratic politics with rule by force.
