A motorized vehicle propelled by anything other than gasoline or diesel.
Alternative-fuel vehicle
A natural lighter than air gas compressed for use as a fuel that consists principally of methane in gaseous form plus naturally occurring mixtures of hydrocarbon gases
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG
A hybrid system used by Honda that is designed to start an stop the hybrid electric vehicle internal combustion engine; in addition, it will assist the internal combustion engine when acceleration is needed.
Integrated motor assist (IMA) mild hybrid system
A fuel composed of an alcohol base that is normally processed from crops, such as corn, sugar, trees or grasses.
Ethanol
an electrochemical device that uses a catalyst-facilitated chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen to create electricity, which is then used to power an electric motor to generator, with the by-products of this process being water and heat.
Fuel cell
A vehicle that is 100 percent electric, emits no air pollutants, and is propelled by one or more electric motors, which are powered by rechargeable battery packs.
A dossil duel primarily composed of methane that can be used as compressed natural gas or liquefied natural gas
Natural gas
A system that can use either the vehicle's internal combustion engine or the electric motor to power the vehicle's transmission and provide propulsion.
Parallel drive system
An alcohol based fuel similar to ethanol. It is also known as wood alcohol because it is processed from natural wood sources, such as trees and yard clippings.
Methanol
A safety feature built into high pressure storage cylinders that is designed to rapidly release gas contents when exposed to high temperatures, such as during a fire.
Pressure release device
A vehicle capable of running on gasoline alone or utilizing the E85 blend of up to 85 percent of ethanol and 15 percent gasoline
Flexible fuel vehicle (FFV)
an odorless, colorless, flammable, non toxic gas that combines easily with other elements.
Hydrogen
A system that uses the internal combustion engine alone to run and onboard generator, which in turn can either run the electric motor.
Series drive system
A safe, non toxic, biodegradable fuel used solely for diesel engines that is processed from domestic renewable resources, such as plant oils, grease; animal fats; used cooking oil;" and, more recently algae.
Biodiesel
A device that rapidly releases product through a small metal tube attachment when detecting excessive amount of heat to preset temperature.
Temperature relief device (TRD)
A hybrid vehicle system in which two separate sources of power are used individually or combined as a propulsion mechanism for the vehicle.
Fuel-cell Vehicle
Also known as propane, a fossil fuel produced from the processing of natural gas and also produced as part of the refining process of crude oil.
Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)
A vehicle that is not a true hybrid system by definition. The motor/generator is not used to propel the vehicle's it is designed to turn off the vehicle's internal combustion engine when the vehicle is idle and turn it back on when the accelerator is activated.
Start/stop mild hybrid system
An event that occurs when the temperature of the liquid and vapor (flammable or nonflammable) within a confining tank or vessel is raised by an exposure to fire to the point where the increasing internal pressures can no longer be contained and the vessel ruptures and explodes.
Boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion (BLEVE)
A device that uses a computerized chip that communicates through radio frequencies to unlock or lock a vehicle as well as start a vehicle remotely without the requirement of traditional keys.
Smart key
A vehicle that uses its electric motor or its internal combustion engine or a combination of both to propel itself.
Full hybrid vehicle
A colorless, odorless, non toxic natural gas that floats on water and is lighter than air when released as a vapor.
Liquefied natural gas (LNG)
Also known as a proton exchange membrane, a thin membrane used in fuel cell system that is placed between the anode and cathode and through which positive electrons are passed.
Polymer exchange membrane (PEM)
