What can deposition form?

Sand dunes, riverbanks, deltas, and beaches

100

What is the difference between an active and dormant volcano?

Dormant volcanos are unlikely to erupt as they haven't erupted in a long time. Active volcanoes could erupt at any time

100

What is a fault?

a crack or break in the earth's crust

100

What is the Stamp Act

a law from Britain that places a tax on printed materials like newspapers, and legal documents. Colonists had to but a stamp and put it on each of these items.

100

What causes a tsunami?

earthquakes on the ocean floor.

200

How can snow cause weathering and erosion?

Snow is water and water can cause erosion by breaking apart land

200

Explain a reverse fault

Plates that pulls apart

200

What is a hotspot?

place where magma partially melts through the Earth's crust

200

What is the Tea Act?

A law from Parliament that said the British Tea Company would be the only company allowed to sell tea. With a heavy tax on tea. The goal was the colonists playing more taxes to Britain.

200

Describe the steps of a volcano forming

1. Magma from the earth's crust rises up through a vent.

2. When magma reaches the surface it is called lava and comes out of the vent

3. Over time, the lava cools and hardens causing a mountain to form

300

What can cause the earth's surface to change?

weathering, erosion, plates moving, diasters, etc.

300

What are the 3 types of volcanoes?

Cinder-cone, Shield, and composition

300

What is erosion?

the process of transporting or breaking away of weathered rock caused by flowing water like rivers and waves. (Think Grand Canyon)

300

Could another Hawaiian island ever form? If so, how?

If yes- the plate could continue to move over the hot spot and another island form where the hot spot is.

300

What is the difference between physical weathering and chemical weathering?

Physical weathering comes from water, waves, freezing and melting and plants growing (roots)

Chemical weathering changes the minerals. Oxygen and carbon dioxide can cause rust and limestone to form.

400
Explain the different ways faults can move

reverse fault, normal fault, and a strike slip fault

400

A steep volcano is called a?

cinder cone volcano

400

A large swiling storm with strong winds and heavy rain is called?

Hurricane

400

How is land shaped?

weather, erosion, and deposition

400

What causes an earthquake to happen?

when tectonic plates collide. They may hit each other in different ways causing vibrations in the earth- earthquakes.

500

How does depositon effect landform?

deposition is the dropping of eroded land. Where it falls creates new land.

500

how does volcano formation differ from volcano erruptions?

formation- makes land (think hawaii)

Eruptions can destroy land

500

Heavy rainfall can cause a?

Flood

500

Why is it important to be able to study and predict disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes, and tornadoes?

If scientists better understand how they form we can predict when they will strike. That gives people more opportunity to prepare and seek shelter.

500

How did the Hawaiian islands form?

Land formed from being near a hot spot active volcano. As the plates moved, land formed over the hot spot volcano.
