What is an atom? What is an element?
An atom is the smallest particle of an element that still has the properties of that element. An element is a substance that cannot be broken apart chemically into other substances. Elements are made up of atoms.

You can only see an atom with a special microscope. This microscope is called a scanning tunneling microscope or STM.

The atomic number is the number of protons in the nuclei. If an element has an atomic number of 31, they have 31 protons and 31 electrons.

They are found in the middle, between the metals and the nonmetals.

What are some examples of an elements properties?Why do different elements have different properties?
Examples of an elements properties are color, hardness, and density. Atoms joing together in different ways which determines their properties. For example in graphite carbon atoms are arranged in sheets so they can separate easily. In a diamond, carbon atoms are bonded tightly to other carbon atoms.
