What IS direct characterization? (Definition)
Direct characterization TELLS the audience what the personality of the character is like.
What IS indirect characterization? (Definition)
Indirect characterization SHOWS things that reveal the personality of the character.
Give a direct characterization using this indirect characterization: As Mr. Smith walked by families, mothers pulled their children close to their side.
Mr. Smith is perceived as dangerous to children.
Give an example of indirect characterization using SPEECH. Then give a direct characterization that supports your indirect characterization.
Indirect using speech: Whenever anyone tries to speak to her, she asks, "Who do you think you are?" rolls her eyes, and walks away. Direct: The character is sassy, arrogant, or just thinks everyone else is beneath her.
Turn this indirect characterization into a direct one: Tim's whole body started to shake and he ran away because somebody tried to start a fight with his friend.
Tim is a coward, doesn't like to fight, pacifist, etc.
What are the five ways of doing indirect characterization?
What the character says (speech), how the character thinks (thoughts), how others feel about the character (effect on others), what the character does (action), or the character's appearance (looks).
Give an example of an indirect characterization using an example of how another character feels about your character (EFFECT ON OTHERS).
For example, "Scott doesn't talk much, but five girls in our homeroom class are currently competing for his attention. This is nothing new. Girls have liked Scott since forever." This shows that Scott is quiet and yet he is popular, which might have something to do with his looks/appearance. From other characters' reactions to Scott, we can infer this.

"The patient boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and did not disobey their mother." Explain what this direct characterization says about the boy and then the girl.
The boy is patient and the girl is quiet.
When a mother told her son and daughter they were going to spending their school break at camp instead of going to Japan, the daughter became angry and pouted. The son responded, "Hey! It's okay, we can have lots of fun at camp this summer! I love being outside and I'm sure you will too!" What does this indirect characterization say about the son?
The boy is positive, upbeat, etc. All of these are direct characterizations about the son. "Happy" is NOT a direct characterization. "Happy" is a feeling.
Give a direct characterization using this indirect characterization: Bibi sat in front of a mirror looking at herself, "What does he see in me?" She wondered.
Bibi is self-conscious and worried about her looks and what others think of her. *For 100 bonus points, say what KIND of indirect characterization is being used.

Finish this characterization claim: "Mulan is a selfless warrior who is loyal to her family."
For example: Mulan pretends to be a man and enlists in the army in order to protect her injured father. Her actions show that she is willing to sacrifice her comfort, even her own life, all to protect her family and loved ones. Especially when considering how it was a taboo for women to serve in the army back then, Mulan took a very high risk to serve her family.
