During the recording sessions for Led Zeppelin IV, Jimmy Page used a specific microphone technique on John Bonham’s drums for “When the Levee Breaks.” He set the mics in a unique location that contributed heavily to the track’s cavernous sound.
What exact stairwell, microphone model, and recording technique were used to achieve that sound?
The drums were recorded in the stairwell of Headley Grange, with two Beyerdynamic M160 ribbon microphones placed at the top of the stairwell, using a natural ambient reverb and the “distance = depth” technique. The signal was compressed through two Universal Audio 1176 compressors chained together, creating that massive, echoing thunder of Bonham’s kit.
