Tell me the rules for naming Ionic Compounds... BE SPECIFIC.
For regular metals, you keep the name of the 1st element and then change the ending of the second element to -ide.
For transition metals, you have to do math to find the roman numeral charge of the cation. Then you keep the name of the first element, put the charge of Roman Numerals in parenthesis and then change the second element.
Tell me the rules for writing chemical formulas for Ionic Compounds.... BE SPECIFIC.
1st write the chemical symbols of the elements with their charges as exponents.
2nd cross the charges over to make them subscripts.
3. Reduce!
2 Non-metals
Prefixes to tell the number of each atom/element.
What is the difference between elements and ions?
Name the following compound...
Al2S3
Aluminum Sulfide
Write the chemical formula of the following compound...
Magnesium Nitride
Mg3N2
Is this a molecular compound or an ionic compound? Will you use prefixes to name it?
NaBr
Ionic Compound, no prefixes used.
What kind of bond creates molecular compounds?
Covalent Bonds
What is the difference between binary and ternary compounds?
Binary has 2 elements.
Ternary has more than two elements.
Name the following compound....
Mg(ClO)2
Magnesium Hypochlorite
Write the chemical formula of the following compound...
calcium phosphate
Ca3(PO4)2
Name the following compound...
BrF7
Bromine Heptafluoride
Write the chemical formula of the following compound...
xenon tetrafluoride
XeF4
What is the difference between a cation and an anion?
Cations are metals with a positive charge.
Anion are non-metals with a negative charge.
PbS2
Lead (IV) Sulfide
Write the chemical formula of the following compound...
lead (II) chloride
PbCl2
Name the following compound...
P4S3
tetraphosphorus trisulfide
Write the chemical formula of the following compound...
pentaphosphorus decoxide
P5O10
What is the difference between metals and transition metals?
Metals have only 1 possible charge, whereas, transition metals have many possible charges.
CuSO4
Write the chemical formula of the following compound...
tin (II) acetate
Sn(C2H3O2)2
How do you know which element should be written/named first in a molecular compound?
The least electronegative element goes first.
What are diatomic molecules and tell me all of them.
Diatomic molecules form molecules with themselves when they are in their pure state, they do not exist alone.
H2, N2, O2, F2, Cl2, Br2, & I2
List TWO differences between ionic compounds and molecular compounds?
Ionic compounds are made up of metal and non-metals and form 1 formula unit. Molecular compounds are made up of 2 non-metals and form molecules.
