100
what did he propose
Henry proposed a principle that can be used to predict what may happen when a change in occurs while at chemical equilibrium.
100
What Did Van't do?
van't hoff made an equation in chemical thermodynamics that relates the change in temperature to the change in equilibrium constant
100
What did gibbs say?
in a system equilibrium is attained when the Gibbs energy is at a minimum value
100
What did these two people come up with?
they came up with the law of mass action
100
what did Berthollet do?
he developed the concept of chemical equilibrium and found out that some chemical reactions were reversible.
200
when did he propose it
this was proposed in 1884
200
What does this used for?
to find an equilibrium constant at an absolute temperature while everything else remains constant.
200
what did he theorize?
that when the chemical potential energy in a reaction (Gibbs energy) was at its lowest point, the reaction will become go to equilibrium as long as pressure and temperature are not disturbed
200
what is the law of mass action?
the law of mass actions explains and predicts the behaviors of solutions in dynamic equilibrium.
200
what did Berthollet contribute?
He contributed to the modern chemical nomenclature
300
when was he born?
Henry was born on October 8, 1950
300
what is the Van't Hoff Equation?
(d ln K)/ (dT) = (delta H) / (RT^2)
300
what does this prove?
this proved that if a solution was not at equilibrium. The excess amounts of potential energy would result in driving the mixture until it reaches a state of chemical equilibrium.
300
what is the theory behind the law of mass action?
The theory has a kinetic aspect to it and an equilibrium aspect to it. both of these aspects were researched by guldberg and waage. They discovered that equilibrium constants were found by using the rate equation they made as well as the kinetic data that they had. they also realized that chemical equilibrium was a dynamic process.
300
what other research did berthollet accomplish?
Bethollet also researched into dyes and different bleaches (introducing the idea of using chlorine as a bleach) and while doing so determined the composition of ammonia.
400
what is Le Chatelier's Principle?
the principle was that if a system at equilibrium was altered to change the properties of the system, the system would react to oppose the change
400
when was this equation proposed?
in 1884
400
When was this idea proposed?
this was proposed in 1873
400
What does the law of mass action state?
the law of mass action states that the rate of chemical reaction is proportional to the concentration of the reacting substances used in the reaction
400
when did most of these discoveries occur?
most of Berthollet's accomplishments were around 1787
