The mathematical formula used to calculate the volume of a rectangle.
What is V = L x W x H
True or False: A gas has mass
True. A gas is made of matter and has mass. We can collect it and measure its weight.
True or False and why: Teresa will weigh the same on Earth as she will on the Moon.
False: Her weight of earth will be different than her weight on the moon. Her mass will be the same, it does not change. Her weight is what will vary. Weight is dependent on the force of gravity being exerted on the mass. The force of gravity is different on Earth than on the Moon, so the force being applied to the mass is different.
This element burns white and yellow and sparkly, like a July 4th sparkler, when ignited in a flame.
What is Manganese?
True or False: When a substance undergoes a physical change, a new substance has formed and it cannot be returned to its original state.
False
The chemical symbol for Chlorine on the periodic table of elements.
What is Cl?
The common, everyday name for Sodium Chloride.
What is salt?
The chemical symbol for Lithium on the periodic table of elements.
What is Li?
The smallest unit of elements, made up of electrons surrounding the nucleus or protons and neutrons.
What is an atom?
During the experiment that involved mixing Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) and Acetic Acid (Vinegar), what was produced and collected in the balloon?
What is Carbon Dioxide gas?
This element burns bright blue when ignited in a flame.
What is Copper?
If Dreycin ignites a spoonful of sugar, the sugar goes through this type of change.
(hint: either a chemical or physical change)
What is a chemical change?
The sugar molecules ignite when exposed to heat. They decompose into a mass of left over black carbon molecules that no longer look like the sugar that you started with. You cannot put it back to its original form and it looks like something new formed (smell, color, heat), so a chemical change has occurred.
True or False: 2cm x 2cm x2cm = 8 cm
False: it will equal 8 cm3.
Units matter! They multiply just like numbers
True or False: A beaker provides a more accurate measurement of volume than a graduated cylinder.
False: A graduated cylinder is a more accurate measuring device.
Anna has mixed Iron pieces with Sodium Chloride and water. She thinks that she can separate the Sodium Chloride from the mixture. Is she correct? If so, how could it be done?
Anna is correct.
She could use a magnet to pull out the Iron pieces since it is magnetic. Then she can use a funnel and filter paper to remove any lingering Iron. Then she could heat the leftover water and Sodium Chloride solution to evaporate the water. She would be left with just Sodium Chloride.
True or False and why: A dinner salad is an example of a mixture.
True, because you can identify the individual components and separate them.
The common, everyday name for dilute Acetic Acid.
hint: Cyla seems to enjoy smelling it ;)
What is Vinegar?
The number 0.0034 has this many significant digits.
What is 2?
Leading zeros are not significant. It is helpful to put the number is scientific notation...3.4 x 10-3
The chemical formula for table salt.
(hint: Think of the letters on the periodic table)
What is NaCl?
An electron carries this type of charge.
What is negative?
What is wafting?
A proton carries this type of charge.
What is positive?
The name for the curve seen at the top of a liquid when you are measuring it. You must view it at eye level to ensure proper measurements.
What is a meniscus?
A neutron carries this type of charge.
What is neutral/none.
The number 370.0 has this many significant digits.
What is 4?
The decimal adds high certainty of the number. We know the number is not 369.9 or 370.1, it is precisely 370.0. The zeros are counted as significant if they come before or after the decimal.
