Biodiversity
100
These biomes get the least precipitation per year than all of the biomes in the world.
Desert and Tundra
100
What are the two major categories of aquatic ecosystems, and how do they differ from each other?
Freshwater and marine. Freshwater are areas with water with relatively no salt content. Marine ecosystems have salt water.
100
What is an estuary?
Where the fresh water of a river meets the salt water of the ocean.
100
What is selective cutting?
What is cutting down only some trees in a forest leaving some growth intact.
100
What is biodiversity and why is it important?
What is the amount of different species in an area. It's important because the more species that are in an area, the more niches that get filled and the wider the food web.
200
What are the key things that define what makes up a biome?
Climate which is made up of temperature and precipitation, and vegetation
200
How are marine ecosystems classified, and what are the four primary marine ecosystems?
The ecosystems are classified by the depth of the water. The four ecosystems are: estuaries, intertidal zones, neritic zones, and the open ocean.
200
What is plankton and why is it important?
Plankton is the tiny organisms that float in the water, and algae plankton are the primary producers in ocean food chains.
200
What is clear cutting? Benefits of it and drawbacks of it?
What is the harvesting of an entire region of a forest leaving no growth behind. Benefits: cheaper, less time consuming, big yield Drawbacks: destroys habitats, long time to grow back, new growth has less diverstiy
200
What affects biodiversity?
What is the size of a biome, the climate, the diversity of niches, and the keystone species that exist there.
300
How are temperate rain forests similar to and different from tropical rain forests.
Both rain forests have a lot of biodiversity and receive quite a bit of rainfall per year. A tropical rain forest is closer to the equator and therefore warmer on a regular basis. In contrast, temperate rain forests are further away from the equator and therefore not as warm and have cooler periods of time.
300
What is generally true about species that live in/near streams and rivers?
They are generally built to withstand/cope with fast moving water and there are few species of plant life.
300
What are coniferous trees and where are they found?
They are trees that produce seeds in cones and leaves shaped like needles. They are found in boreal forest biomes.
300
What are some illegal and harmful forms of fishing?
What is poisoning, explosions, very fine netting
300
Explain the relationship between the terms extinct, endangered and threatened.
What is a species will first become threatened if something happens to their habitat/diet/etc. Once many organisms die off, the species becomes endangered of no longer existing. Once there is no remaining members of a species, it is extinct.
400
What is unique about the soil in tundras?
It is frozen most of the year and that frozen soil layer is referred to as permafrost.
400
What abiotic factors are all aquatic ecosystems affected by?
Sunlight, temperature, oxygen, and salt content
400
What are renewable resources?
What is resources that are naturally occurring and is always available or is naturally replaced in a relatively short time.
400
What is aquaculture?
What is it is the raising of fish and other water-dwelling organisms for food.
400
What are threats to biodiversity?
What is pollution, nonnative species, illegal hunting, and habitat destruction
500
How are deserts and grasslands similar?
Both regions receive small amounts of rainfall per year and both have few trees and more shrubs.
500
What things usually grow in neritic waters and provide homes and protection to many species?
Coral reefs and kelp forests
500
What is poaching?
What is the illegal killing or removal of wildlife from their habitats.
500
What rules are in place to protect fish populations?
What is laws/regulations defining what type of equipment can be used, fishing limits, catch and release
500
What is captive breeding?
What is the breeding of organisms in zoos or reserves and caring for them in their younger years with the goal of releasing them into the wild.
