Density is how much _______ is packed into an object.

Matter!

100

What is a mixture?

When you take two or more things and put them together, but they don’t turn into something new. You can still see the different pieces and even pick them apart

100

What kind of substance tastes sour? And what kind of examples can you think of?

An acid. Examples: lemons, oranges, + vinegar (answers may vary)

100

What do our eyes need in order to see things around us?

Light! Our eyes work like a camera, taking in light and sending pictures to our brain! Without light, we can’t see anything!

100

What is a chemical reaction?

A chemical reaction happens when substances mix and change into something new.

200

If an object is very dense, will it sink or float?

Sink!

200

What is a solution?

a special kind of mixture where one thing dissolves into another, and you can’t see the separate parts anymore

200

What do bases taste and feel like? What examples can you think of?

Bases taste bitter and feel slippery, like soap and baking soda

200

What are sounds made up of?

Sounds are made up of vibrations (tiny movements in the air). These vibrations then travel to our ear, and our brain helps us understand what we’re hearing!

200

What are some signs of a chemical reaction?

Bubbles or fizzing, Color change, A new smell, Heat or coldness

300

If an object has a lot of buoyancy, what will it do?

It will float!

300

Does a mixture or solution allow you to still see and separate the parts?

A mixture

300

On a pH scale, how can you tell if a substance is an acid or a base?

You can tell by looking at the number. If the pH is below 7, the substance is an acid. If the pH is above 7, the substance is a base. If the pH is exactly 7, the substance is neutral, like water.

300

How are we able to smell things?

Tiny scent molecules in the air enter our nose. Special parts inside our nose send messages to our brain, helping us recognize different smells!

300

What is color change and can you think of an example?

Color change is when some reactions create a new color when substances mix. Example: When a cut apple turns brown over time.

400

What is the ability of something to float in water called?

Buoyancy!

400

What happens when sugar is stirred into water? (Hint: Think about what it does and whether it becomes a mixture or a solution)

It dissolves and forms a solution.

400

What is the scale that tells you whether a substance is an acid or a base?

The pH scale!

400

What is refraction? Can you think of an example?

Refraction is a process when the water bends light, which makes it look like the colors are separating or changing. Ex: A straw in water looks "broken" or shifted!

400

What is an example of some chemical reactions that create gas? (Hint: Cake!)

When you bake a cake, the ingredients create a gas that helps the cake rise.

500

If two objects are the same size, but one is heavier, which one has more density?

The heavier one!

500

What is the biggest difference between a mixture and a solution?

In a solution, the parts are completely mixed and cannot be seen separately. In a mixture, the parts are still visible.

500

What happens when an acid and a base mix?

They balance each other out!

500

How do taste and smell work together to help you recognize food and why is it important?

Taste helps you detect basic flavors, while smell adds more detail to the flavor. Both are needed for food to taste right. If your nose is blocked, food doesn’t taste as good and you won't be able to tell if it has gone bad, which can cause illnesses later!

500

If you see bubbles or fizzing, what does that tell you?

It means gas is being made!
