On 10 October 1880, he was sustained as President of the Church. He was a gifted writer and journalist who published a book on the Atonement and edited some of the Church’s most important periodicals. On many occasions he displayed his courage and his deep devotion to the restored gospel, including voluntarily joining his brethren in Carthage Jail, where he was shot four times. His personal motto, “The kingdom of God or nothing.” He "was third we know"

During his leadership, the Church faced serious financial difficulties. While speaking at a meeting, he declared that the people of the Church had neglected the law of tithing, and the Lord had told him that if Church members more faithfully paid a full tithing, blessings would be showered upon them. He preached the importance of tithing to congregations, and the Saints obeyed his counsel, and the Church possessed sufficient funds to pay all its creditors and become debt-free.

He gave renewed emphasis to missionary work by urging every member to make a commitment to bring at least one new member into the Church each year. He became well known for his repeated admonition: “Every member a missionary.” He had presided over the Church for almost 20 years, during which time the membership of the Church increased almost threefold.

Most of his vocal cords had been removed because of cancer, and he spoke in a quiet, husky voice that Latter-day Saints came to love. Known for his humility, his commitment, his ability to work, and his personal slogan, “Do It.” He started the building of temples at a faster pace too. Twelfth prophet of the restored church.

He frequently granted interviews to journalists around the world, answering their questions about Church doctrine and policy and bearing his testimony of the Savior and the restored gospel. He saw the Internet as a means of bringing the Church closer to its members and during his administration, the Church launched LDS.org, FamilySearch.org, and Mormon.org.
