Used to express grumpy dislike of something generally regarded as enjoyable, in particular Christmas.
The expression was first used in Charles' Dickens' "A Christmas carol", by Scrooge, a particularly grumpy character.

It was a long term tradition for the whole family to trim the tree together.
Decorate the Christmas tree, although originally, 'trim' means to cut.
My Dad gave me a roasting for borrowing his car without asking.
To give someone a roasting = be angry with someone and criticise them severely
My Mum always decks the halls for Christmas. Not only at home, but she even decorates the windows at work with chalk drawings!
To deck the halls = Decorate your home or workplace for the holidays.
I know the amount of gifts is a little excessive, but Christmas comes but once a year!, right?
Since Christmas only happens once a year, we should treat it as a special time by being good to others or by indulging children.
