Las Posadas commemorates the journey that Joseph and Mary made from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a safe refuge where Mary could give birth to the baby Jesus.

This flower with pointed red leaves is native to Mexico. It has become known as the Christmas flower. It started in the 1600s, when Franciscan monks in the town of Taxco de Alarcon first used the shrub in Nativity processions.
