First major land battle of the Civil War. Union forces attack the confederate army. Confederate General “Stonewall Jackson” earns his nickname. The south was fighting on familiar land and used the terrain to their advantage. This battle showed both the Confederacy and the Union that the war was going to be long and bloody. Why didn't the Founders address slavery in the DOI?
They needed to form a Union; abolishing slavery was too controversial
What did the Gettysburg address do?
Prior to 1863, Lincoln's goal was to preserve the Union. War was not about slavery. In the Gettysburg address, Lincoln makes the war about the abolition of slavery. Proclaims that slaves are emancipated. Goal of the war is now abolition of slavery.

How did Lee surrender to Grant?
In Virginia at Appomattox Court House. Lee’s army was much smaller than Grant’s. Lee’s army was running out of food and ammunition. Lee wanted to avoid further damage to the south and spare the sacrifice of his men. Ulysses S. Grant and Union forces are victorious. Union officially wins the war.

The Miss. Comp. had made slavery a federal issue. The national government made the laws regulating slavery. Overturning MC made slavery a state issue; determined that the issue of slavery was not under the parameters of national legislation
Is slavery an important enough issue that it should be dealt with by the federal government instead of each state?
North said yes; south said no. I think most of us today would say yes, because we consider it a moral issue.
Things like speeding laws can be left up to the states, but moral issues are decided at a federal level. Whether that's a good thing or bad thing is a whole separate debate
What happened at the Battle of Antietam?
Lee and Confederacy launch invasion on the North. Union had discovered the battle plans wrapped around case of cigars. Union kind of wins because they stop the south from advancing. Considered a stalemate.
