They were dedicating a cemetery to those who had died there. The Emancipation Proclamation shifted the goal of war from just reunifying the Union to eliminating slavery. Every man is created equal.

It was the turning point of the war. Union won. People were so hungry they were eating dogs and mules. Confederacy was cut in two, and the South is running out of men.

They believed that states could leave the Union if they wanted to. It wasn't a binding effect. 

They knew that if slavery didn't move west, their economy would go downhill and it would end.

Grant pardoned Lee's soldiers and sent them home with their personal possessions, horses, and three days' rations, and officers were permitted to keep their sidearms. Each side just wanted to move past the war.
