Violent fights broke out in Kansas between abolitionists and pro slavery people. State abolitionists were armed and and some slave owners sent men to fight.

North started out fighting to preserve the Union and evolved into fighting to end slavery with the Emancipation Proclamation. The South was fighting to preserve their way of life.

Was the 15th Amendment successful?

Directly following the Civil War, the 15th Amendment was not effective. Even though African Americans had the right to vote, many southern states required poll taxes and literacy tests. African Americans were too poor to pay poll taxes and, as slaves, they had not been taught to read.
