Carpetbaggers were Northerners who moved to the South during the Reconstruction era. They also worked as teachers, merchants, businessmen, or at the Freedman's Bureau, an organization created by Congress to provide aid for newly liberated Black Americans. Even though they were called “carpetbaggers” as an insult, they were actually well educated members of middle-class society, many being former Union soldiers who wanted to shape the South into an image of the North, which they considered to be a more advanced society. “Scalawags” were white southern Republicans who backed the policies of Reconstruction rather than opposed them.
