The North‘s economy was mostly reliant on factories and industry. These things were run by the European immigrants.
The South’s economy was mostly reliant on farming and agriculture. Slaves were the ones who worked on the plantations.
The North had more control over the navy in the 1800s. What did they do with the US Navy to express their power/control over the South?
The North sent their Navy to blockade the South’s ports. This prevented the South from importing and exporting their goods (trading).
Once a slave decided they were going to run away, they could not turn back. They also tried their best to not get caught. What would happen if they got caught?
Slaves who got caught could be sent back to their original slave owners, sold to new slave owners, punished, or even face death for running away.

This compromise was used to try to fix the South’s issue of taxation and representation through population. They decided that they would count 3/5ths of the slave population in each state to give the South this representation while still considering the slaves as property.

African Americans also used songs as slave codes. They would use these songs/codes to secretly communicate with other slaves about what their plans were, where to run to, where to hide at, and more without slave owners knowing.
What is the definition of a slave? What was life like for a slave?
To be enslaved means to be the legal property of another person.
There are several things that the slaves could not do (unlisted on here), and they had absolutely no rights or choices of any kind as long as they were enslaved.

The South’s economy was struggling more and more leading up to (and during) the Civil War. Many families had a hard time affording goods and everyday necessities.
In order to counteract this, they printed their own money.
This compromise split the United States right across the middle using the 36º30’ line. This compromise was made in order to hopefully maintain the balance between slave states and free states.

The North having more control over the US Navy meant that they could control imports and exports (trade).
They also used this power to set up blockades in the southern region, and prevented them from being able to send or receive the goods they needed.
This act was meant to give US citizens the ability to make political decisions in the state/territory for themselves (also known as popular sovereignty). Two territories, Kansas and Nebraska, were allowing this decision making to take place as they became new states.
